Consumers are looking for specific experiences and the opportunities are there for hotels to create bespoke experiences tailored to their needs, continued Allen, one of the speakers at this year's R&R Forum . "Hotels really need to identify with what they do best from an experiential point of view" and may want to look into experiential programming, especially in the shoulder season and off-peak periods, he said.

Investor interest is increasing in wellness retreats and mountain resorts and "we're seeing specific resorts being built tailored to that as well as development and renovation within existing resorts that are adapting their product to fit this trend," according to Allen. "We're not just talking now about the traditional spa or fitness area, but also about sleeping environment or nutritional needs," he said.
